Abstract

Transgender (trans) identities, binary and nonbinary, respond to contextual changes regarding gender as a social construct. Because of the social norms associated with the gender binary, trans people may experience internalized transphobia. The objectives of the study are: (1) to examine the relationship between internalized transphobia with psychological distress and self-efficacy in the trans population residing in Puerto Rico; (2) assess whether there are differences between trans and non-binary people with respect to internalized transphobia; and (3) explore whether there are differences between trans people receiving hormone treatment and trans people not receiving treatment, and their relationship to internalized transphobia. The sample consisted of 58 trans people. Descriptive and correlational statistics were performed. Linear regression analysis was performed to predict psychological distress, using internalized transphobia and self-efficacy as predictors. Group comparisons were made between internalized transphobia, trans and non-binary identities, and hormone treatment. The results suggest that the greater the internalized transphobia, the greater the psychological distress, and the greater the psychological distress, the lower the self-efficacy. In addition, they suggest greater internalized transphobia in binary trans people in comparison to non-binary folks, especially those under hormone treatment. Finally, the limitations and contributions of the study are presented.
