From 2004 to 2017, diabetes was the third leading cause of death in Puerto Rico, with 3,263 reported cases. In 2019, the number of children and adolescents diagnosed with type 1 diabetes increased to 244,000. During these developmental stages, the role of caregivers is crucial in the proper management of the condition, including treatment adherence and retention. It is not surprising that this responsibility generates feelings of frustration, anguish, guilt, and low self-efficacy among caregivers, which may result in poor glycemic control in adolescents. However, research has found that self-compassion in caregivers of adolescents with type 1 diabetes can act as a buffering factor and contribute to successful disease management. For this reason, this study translated and adapted the SCS-Dp scale using the back-translation method. This process led to a version with culturally responsive terms while preserving the constructs it measures (self-compassion and judgments). The SCS-Dp-PR is a useful resource for specialists treating type 1 diabetes, as it allows them to understand how these verbalizations can impact disease management both positively and negatively. In addition, this study enhances the visibility of caregivers of adolescents with type 1 diabetes and opens the door to future studies and public policies that benefit this group.
