Conversion therapy (CT) is an approach that utilizes traditional therapies (ej., aversion therapy, cognitive-behavior therapy, individual therapy, psychoanalysis, etc.) with the goal of changing the sexual orientation of an individual from homosexual to heterosexual. This is a controversial therapy in several regions of the world, and is very difficult for mental health professionals (ej., psychologists, psychiatrists) busy in their clinical practice to have the required time to determine in which of these regions of the world the use of this therapeutic approach is not prohibited, prohibited, or ambiguous. This article provides the information those professionals should have to prevent ethical and legal problems with the use of CT in clinical contexts.
