Abstract

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has been associated with psychological well-being (BP) and social support (SS), particularly in older adults. Other research has found that the excessive use of ICT has an impact on the well-being of this population due to a sedentary lifestyle. The main objective of the study was to find whether the use of ICT promotes BP and SS in a sample of older adults in Puerto Rico. The design was non-experimental cross-sectional with a correlational approach. A sample of 83 older adults (59 to 83 years old) were recruited. A low, negative, and marginally significant association was found between ICT and BP in the group of older adults who reported the highest Total ICT Use Index. No significant relationship was found between ICT and AS. In conclusion, excessive use of ICT has a direct impact on BP because it reduces contact with other people and increases a sedentary lifestyle. The aim is to educate the population of older adults regarding the adverse results that excessive use of ICT has on their well-being and social support.
