Alcohol or Substance Use During the Quarantine: Psychopathologic Symptoms and Coping Skills

The objectives of this exploratory study of a mixed approach were: (a) to identify if there is a significant difference in coping skills and psychopathological symptomatology between a group of people who used substances as a coping skill during quarantine due to COVID-19 (n = 32) and a group with minimum/none alcohol or substance use (n = 32) and (b) explore the experiences of individuals with substance use in quarantine. The first two objectives were analyzed using t-tests. The results suggest that people who used substances reported the use of religion significantly less and the use of humor significantly more. In addition, participants that used alcohol or substances showed significantly more symptoms of obsessions/compulsions, depression, anxiety, paranoid ideation, and psychoticism. A thematic analysis was carried out using NVivo-12. Six main themes were identified: experience during quarantine, coping skills, reasons for consuming substances, changes in consumption, impact on health and quality of life and experiences with mental health services and medical cannabis dispensaries. This study contributes to the development of interdisciplinary initiatives that identify and promote the use of adaptive strategies for managing emotions and stressful situations.
