The purpose of this investigation was to explore the symptoms of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and coping strategies after a victimization, and the relationship between these variables with the population of adult victims of crime residents in Puerto Rico. An ex post facto, non-experimental transversal research design of exploratory type as well as correlational scope was used. The sample consisted of 81 Puerto Rican adults between 21 years or older. The results indicate that there is a high and significant correlation between the symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress. There was a low and inversely significant correlation between the symptoms of depression and the emotion focused as a way of coping. Results, also suggested, that the use of avoidance coping showed a moderate correlation between the symptoms of depression and of posttraumatic stress disorder. It is concluded that victims of crime present a variety of symptom profiles and that their coping response is diverse and multidimensional.
